Second Draft

It took 9 year to Marco Polo to travel around Europe to Asia, but today, it can be done in a single day by plane. The world is becoming even smaller than ever. Transportation technology is getting more and more unbelievable. It became more convenient to move around and as a result, it led us to the era of globalization. Transportation, in general, can be categorized into three modes: land, water, and air and each mode have its own advantages.

First is land transportation, which is the oldest way of travel. Nowadays, there are two kinds of transportation: vehicle and train. For about the vehicle, the most important aspect is convenience. Car always is in front of home, and it can go wherever driver wants to go. Vehicle transportation is the most common way of travel. It consists of private car, taxi, bus, and so on. Train, in contrast, is not that convenient, but it is faster than car. Since train is always on the railway so it rarely stuck in a traffic jam. Also, thanks to this characteristic, train is usually on time.

Second is water transportation by ship. As ship is moving through water, of course it cannot make high speed compared to other transportation modes. But talking about the luggage transportation, ship's load capacity is unmatched to others, and that's why that nowadays exports and imports are still highly relying on water transportation.

Last is air transportation. This mode was developed comparatively later, so it boasts a state-of-art and cutting-edge technology. As plane flies in the air, so it can make very high speed, and never be jammed. Air transportation is the main cause of globalization, which can take passengers anywhere in the Earth in just one day.

Contemporary transportations are completely depends on those three modes and these entire three make up for the other's weak points. Land transportation is suitable for daily life transportation, water transportation for freightage, and air transportation for traveling over countries and continents. These three modes are the axis of nowadays human being's life.

The History of Transportation Development

Walking was human's first means of transportation. After that, humans started to ride animals for higher speed. Also, riding animals was a good way to carry loads. At long last, the wheel was invented. It was a wonderful invention. The wheel made the animal transportation more efficient because it allows heavier burdens to carry. After the industrial revolution, humans did not rely on animal muscles anymore. Also, the invention of the steam engine developed the transportation rapidly. And now we can see a variety of good transportations in the land, air and the sea.

The first forms of land transportation were horses. And the automobile was invented at the turn into the 20th century. Approximately 100 years after, the automobile became the most common land vehicle which includes bus, truck and motorcycle. Also, the automobile offers us high flexibility and an easy life because we are able to go everywhere in cars. And rail transportation also is another major form of land transportation. Rail transportation can carry lots of passengers or freight. Besides, it is very safe to move. And it move with more efficient than the automobile though not as efficient as ships.

Do you know about the history of a ship? The first water transportation was an canoe cut out from trees. And boats, ships or sailboats appeared in history but steam ships didn't appear until the mid 1800s. At the beginning of steam ships, the steam was produced burning woods or coals. But now most ships have an engine using a refined type of petroleum. And modern sea transportation is a highly effective method of transporting large goods. Moreover, the transportation by sea is significantly less costly than air transportation.

The Wright brothers made the first successful flights on 17 December 1903. It was the first airplane. After World War I, air transportation became a fast way to express goods and over long distances. And in the beginning of World War II, many countries had built airports, and there were lots of pilots available. Also, the war brought a variety of technical innovations to air transportation. Eventually, air transportation was booming. Now air transportation is able to transport people and loads quickly over longer distances, though it need high costs and energies.

Transportation is the movement of people and goods from one location to another. It gave us a very significant impact on human development. Also, we were able to enrich the living through good transportations in the land, air and the sea. So, the history of human has developed along with transportation development. Therefore, positive uses of transportation can help advance the human race, creating a more healthier and better world.

The Various Types of the PC

There was a businessman who was interviewed in the conference room. He had a document envelop and put out one thing which was enough to make the presses surprised. He soon became in a flood of flashlight. It was a Mac book which was the thinnest laptop in the world. Nowadays, there are many types of computers. Without the PC, we could not imagine the modern life. We can see computers everywhere and have to use it whenever we work to keep up with the new trend and make a progress in working. Sometimes you can see a person who has lots of PCs. However, can you classify all the types of PCs? I think it is not easy if you have not enough ideas of the PC. When it comes to this huge transition to a new technological society, I will introduce three types of the PC.

First of all, the best-selling computers are called as a desktop. As the name shows us, buying the desktop means using it on the desk. An eye-catching feature of the desktop is too big to carry around and use it outside. Furthermore, the desktop cannot work by itself. It needs many devices. When you buy a desktop, you need to buy a monitor, a keyboard, and a mouse, at least. However, if you have a huge knowledge of PC, buying the desktop can be the best choice due to the fact that the desktop’s cost performance ratio is very good and you can upgrade it by yourself.

On the other hand, the most well-known PC is the laptop. In my opinion, the laptop is the best PC for computer illiterates because the laptop is a PC that includes every device in one thing. For example, the laptop has a rechargeable battery, a keyboard and a monitor. You do not need to buy other devices. Just buy only one. Also the laptop is not so complicate to use. Furthermore, it is not heavy unlike the desktop and easy to use. Nevertheless, the laptop’s negative point is the size of the monitor which depends on the laptop’s weight. Even though, the laptop has a negative point, buying the laptop is good for computer illiterates.

In addition, there is the most convenient computer called as a Tablet PC. We can find some similarities and differences between the laptop and the Tablet. First of all, the laptop and the Tablet have lots of similarities. The Tablet does not need any other devices, has the rechargeable battery, and is easy to carry around like the laptop. On the other hand, since the Tablet’s monitor is made up of a touch panel, the Tablet has no keyboard. When you use the Tablet, you should control everything with the touch panel. Not only that, but the tablet is also lighter and smaller than the laptop.

There are three types of the PC which are called the desktop, the laptop and the Tablet in the modern society. The desktop can be powerful, but we cannot use it everywhere because of the weight. However, the desktop is completely fit to office work due to the big monitor unlike the laptop. Next, the most famous computer is the laptop because of its portability and convenience. In addition, there is the Tablet PC which can be used everywhere and has the touch panel. Even though, the Tablet is not so popular and hard to adjust to the touch panel, it might be the best choice if you adjust to the touch panel and want to use the PC everywhere. What do you think about the three types of the PC which I mentioned before? Is it helpful to you? At least, I hope you can figure out what kinds of PCs people have.

                                                       Essential nutrients for our body.

Food has many uses in our lives. It is used to satisfy hunger and to also to satisfy our desire for food. It can also be used as a median for interacting with others. However, out all these uses the most important reason for eating food is this; to maintain a well balanced and sound body. A sound body can be acquired when people consume a well balanced diet. Then what can be understood as a well balanced diet? Accodring to nutritional science, a well balanced diet is an adequate consumption of proper food that contains essential nutrients for the body.

Carbohydrates is one such examople. it makes startch and starch makes blood sugar. Blood sugar is an one of the basic components that makes up the bod. It acts as a main energy supplier to the body and is very important as it also plays a role in providing energy to the brain, Food that consists of carbohydrates are rice, noodles, chips, bread, sweets and soda. Almost all people consume carbohyrdate related food everyday. For example in Korera, Japan and China people eat rice as a staple diet, while in the U.S.A or the U.K. people often eat sandwiches and pasta. Also childern and many adults love to eat chocolate or sweets which are full of carbohydrates.

Protein is another important food element that needs to be considered. It makes up our body's blood cells. The proteins play a role by building up the framework of our body, supply materials to repair body waste, supply the essential ingredients of the body lubricants and maintain the strength of the muscles. Hair and nails are made up of protein. Proteins are nitrogenous elements. They are the only nutrients that have nitrogen in a form that is acceptable to our body, and as the body has to have nitrogent, this nutrient is essential. We can get protein mainly form meat, fish, nuts and eggs. Nowadays some people eat protein a lot to develop muscles.

Fat has the most calories than other food element. It contains 4,220 calories to the pound, which is much higher than the caloric value of any other classes of food. Due to the fact that these foods are high in calories, we should be careful not to overeat them. In cold regions fat is more required due to the fact that the body burns off more heat to stay warm, while in the warm regions they need less. Thus it is important that people in warm weather eat less of fat related foods, or else suffer from becoming obese. Dairy products, butter and chocolate are mostly composed of fat.

Eating only what one wants is not good for a balanced body. People nowadays have become more interested in their health than before, but they still don't eat a balanced meal. For example people are interested in diet eat only meat or vegetables of fruits. This might be good for the appearance in the short run, but in the end the body will become unbalanced and illnesses will arise. Eating carbohydrates, protein and fat in the proper amounts is the best way for both appearance and health.

Assignment No.3 - 2nd Draft by Joontae Kim

What Kinds of Friends Do You Have?

What is one thing you cannot live without? Some people would say it is money while others may tell you that it is a house. For me, it is my friends. Since I am living alone away from my parents, my friends have become someone who I can count on, get inspiration from as well as keep each other company. Then, are all friends possess same qualities and characteristics? I do not think so. I think friends can be categorized into these three according to their dynamics. There are a friend for benefit which refers to a friend who we take advantage and vice versa, a frenemy that is a friend who we constantly compete with, and a genuine friend who really cares for you and helps you when needed.

First, there is a friend for benefit. It is a kind of friend we keep in touch just in case we have a favor to ask. For example, I would hang out with students majoring in Spanish or students taking same class with me. It is because I may miss a class and need to borrow notes from them, need a partner to prepare for the presentation and final exam. Also, we may make friends with a colleague or keep in touch with a former colleague. When we think that it is impossible to meet the deadline of the project, we may be able to ask this type of friend for a help and return the favor someday. Also, we may ask our former colleagues for helpful data or sources once we used in our former workplace. Since it is a need-based friendship, it is weak and may fade away once we feel that it is unnecessary to maintain the relationship.

I have a 15-year-long friend called Jongsu. I have known him since he transferred to my middle school. Ever since we got close, we have argued with one another constantly, competed for awards, and even got into fist fights a couple times. Although it seems like we are just rivals or competitors rather than friends, we have a lot of things in common as well. For example, we possess similar taste for music and art, love for the 19th century American literature as well as a craving for extra spicy food. Therefore, we talk about our common interests and eat out together from time to time. We share a dynamic that is often seen between the frenemies, friends who are rivals or competitors at the same time. There is an old saying "Keep your friends close but your enemies closer". It basically means that we should watch over our enemies and try to understand them better in order to win. Nowadays, however, it has been changed to "Keep your friends close but your frenemies closer." I completely agree with this new version. We should make friends with our enemies if there are common interests and we can enjoy spending time together with them occasionally. Also, once we learn how to ease the tension between our frenemies, we may be able to improve ourselves using that tension as our source of motivation.

Last but not least, there is a genuine friend. There is an old saying "A friend in need is a friend indeed." I think it illustrates what a genuine friend should be. A genuine friend is a type of friend that cares very much for wellbeing of his friends and willing to go beyond his limit to help them when it is necessary. A few years ago, I suffered from a severe spinal fractures and had to be hospitalized for a couple of weeks. Although I needed someone to take care of me, other family members of mine were living abroad because of my father's job. It was a time when I needed my friends the most. Some of them who I thought to be very close, however, completely neglected me making excuses such as "I am too busy! I don't even have the time to take care of myself." or "I am so sorry! Hospitals just make me nervous. I would rather not go." All those excuses, however, didn't stop Jaemin from visiting me at the hospital. Although Jaemin was working for an investment bank, notorious for its late working hours, he stopped by late at night to see how I was doing and asked me if I needed any help. After the incident, I come to know who is my real friend or not. Furthermore, the relationship with Jaemin reached another level where we are so comfortable with each other that we can share the deepest and darkest secretes with one another.

As I have mentioned above, I believe that there are three kinds of friends: a friend we seek when we have a favor to ask, a friend who we hang out and compete with each other at the same time, and a friend who genuinely cares about you and helps you no matter what. Although we wish that every friend we have is genuine, it is very unlikely. Also, it is really hard to figure out who is a genuine friend until we encounter incidents such as an accident, hospitalization, or others. Therefore, my advice to you is that try to make as many friends as possible, follow where your heart leads you, and hope that he is as genuine as you are.

The best transportation for traveling Seoul

EIT 200702724 Hyunmin Lee

Have you ever been to Seoul? Seoul is a fascinating city for traveler since historical sites and modern cultural facilities coexist in harmony. But like other cities, Seoul also has a heavy traffic. Whatever transportation you choose can affect the quality of your trip. Therefore, you should ponder over transportation, when you make a plan for Seoul trip. In the process of choosing transportation, time and money are important matters to consider. And, you have to think about theme of your trip, too. For example, if your theme is visiting every tourism attractions in a short time, subway is appropriate for you. That's because subway is the fastest among others. As a seoul citizen, I would like to inform you of what the best transportation to enjoy Seoul is.

The best transportation to travel Seoul is a bus. First of all, bus fee is very cheap. It's less than 1 dollar. So, you can save lots of money. And there are 420 bus routes. You can get to everywhere in Seoul. In addition, some routes are even connected to Gyeonggi Province. With that bus, you can visit some tourist attractions in Gyeonggi Province, too. Another advantage of using bus is that you can enjoy a great view of Seoul. While you move to other destination, you can see Han river, Nam-san or skyscrapers through a window. While looking at the view, you will see what seoul is really like. And it is also good for people whose theme is seeing every part of Seoul. Fresh air is also one of advantages of using bus. As you know, subway and subway stations are not well-ventilated. But, the bus is ventilated well by the doors and windows frequently being opened.

Another good way is taking a subway. Its fee is also cheap. The fare is as same as bus. But, the biggest advantage of using subway is punctuation. Since there is no traffic jam, subway is the fastest transportation in Seoul. Especially in rush hour, sometimes using bus takes two times longer than using subway. Therefore, if you want to visit as many spots as possible in a short time, using subway is the best option. And It is also easy to transfer the subway. Now, there are nine lines, those lines are connected to each other. Without paying extra money, you can transfer to another.

A taxi is also good transportation to travel Seoul. Compared to other transportation, it is expensive. However, taxi is very convenient. Above all, the taxi is the most private transportation among others. You don't have to take a roundabout way. The driver will help you go directly to whichever destination you want. Furthermore, the driver will drive you right in front of your destination. Then, you don't have to walk and you can save time and energy. For people who dislike walking or who are likely to get tired with ease, a taxi is the best choice.

In order to make a good trip, you should make a plan specifically from accommodation to transportation. When you travel, you may spend a lot of time moving. As you understand the advantages of the each transportation well, you can manage your trip better. If some of you have a plan to visit Seoul, you can get information from my own priority. The top priority is the bus, followed by subway and taxi. I hope you can enjoy the Seoul with my tips.

The Cheese and Wine

What do you prefer to eat with wine? When all is said and done, there's nothing better than cheese. There's one thing you may notice about both wine and cheese. They are both fermented foods. Basically all kind of wines go particularly well with cheeses, because cheeses have the essential amino acids which help to break down alcohol. Regardless of this fact, everybody knows that cheese go with wine. However, I always spent a lot of time to select a cheese among various cheeses. So today, I will give some tips which cheese taste good with which wine.

Let's look at blue cheese for a dessert wine first. The most typical blue cheeses are Roquefort, Gorgonzola, and Stilton. The blue cheese is left to age for long time and tastes strongly salty. This salty taste enriches the sweet flavor of dessert wine. This is why the blue cheese goes well with a sweet dessert wine such as French Sauternes or Germany Trockenbeerenauslese.

Next we will see Parmesan, Gruyere, and Cheddar. Even though I usually enjoy these with red wine, I have to choose different wines because of their own flavor. First of all, Parmesan is the representative hard cheese. Pouring some honey over parmesan is the better way to appreciate its flavor with medium bodied red wine like French Beaujolais. And Gruyere, the typical cheese in Switzerland, is mostly used in the fondue. Its mild creamy flavors make me savoring with Australian Shiraz which is very strong flavor. The last thing is Cheddar that is familiar with sandwich fillings. Actually you may enjoy this cheese with French Merlot which is medium bodied red wine, also high-acid white wines with a long period of aging.

Who doesn't love the taste of Mozzarella cheese? Mozzarella is a mild white Italian cheese. It has a rubbery texture and is often eaten as on pizza. Not only with pizza but also with French Chardnonnay goes well. Chardnonnay is kind of white wine and isn't aged in oak casks. Mozzarella cheese has fresh milk flavor which makes white wine best.

Selecting a great cheese is too tricky, because there are too many cheeses and wines in the world. The reason why I categorize cheeses according to kind of wine is that we often eat cheese with wine. However, the more I learn about cheese and wine, the more I enjoy the taste of cheese in different ways. From now on, I hope you to have a choice of various cheeses when you drink wine.

(Classification essay)

Categorize food according to its nutritional benefit.

Food has been one of the most important culture in human's life.  Even though primitives men didn't have general knowledge, they took a risk for hunting for their food. Thinking some people who became millionaires in restaurant business, we can estimate how people cherish food culture. Above all men eat food for satisfaction, but there is more important reason for eating food; It is for the sake of maintaining our body soundly. Sound body can be acquired when people ingest a broad variety of food.  Then, which food makes body balance? According to stiology, there are several classified units for sound balanced body.

Carbohydrate makes starch and starch makes body sugar which is one of the basic component of body. Body sugar plays a role as the main energy supplier, especially it mainly supplies energy to  brain cell. Food that is consist of carbohydrate is rice, noodle, chips, bread, sweet and soda. Almost people enjoy eating carbohydrate. For example In Korea, Japan and China eat rice as staple diet, In the U.S or the U.K  often eat sandwhich instead of proper meal, children and many adults love to eat chocolate or sweet which are full of carbohydrate.

Protein maintains our body's cell. The proteins play a role as building up the framework of the body, and supply materials to repair body waste, also supply the essential ingredients of the body lubricants , and are necessary to maintain the strength of the muscles. Hair, fresh, nail and toe are consist of protein. The proteins are nitrogenous foods. They are the only foods that contain nitrogen in a form that is acceptable to the body, and as the body has to have nitrogen, these foods are essential. We can get protein mainly from meat, fish, nuts and eggs. Nowadays some people eat protein a lot for making muscle.

Fat is our most concentrated food. It contains 4,220 calories to the pound, which is much higher than the caloric value of any other class of food. It's because these foods are so concentrated, we should be careful to avoid overeating of them. In cold climates or cold seasons fats is efficient food, the thing is nature provides them abundantly in the polar regions. In warm weather people should eat less of these foods. Those who eat too much fat, whether vegetable or animal, in hot weather are apt to suffer much from the heat, and to have skin oily. Dairy product, butter and fat food is mostly composed of fat.

Eating only what one wants is not good for body balance. Although recently people are more interested in diet table before, they still don't eat equivalently. Some people only eat meat, doing emperor diet, another people eat only vegetable or fruit, even I am doing one food diet with chicken. I know that it might be good for appearance, at the end my body couldn't be lasted. Eating carbohydrate, protein evenly and getting few fat would be the best way to have a sound body.

Actually you may enjoy this cheese with French Merlot which is medium bodied red wine, also high-acid white wines with a long period of aging.

Who doesn't love the taste of mozzarella cheese? It goes well not only with pizza but French chardnonnay which is kind of white wine and isn't aged in oak casks. Fresh milk flavor in mozzarella cheese itself adds flavor to white wine.

Selecting great cheese with wine is too tricky, because there are too many cheeses and wines in the world. The reason why I categorize cheeses according to kind of wine is the most common foods. However, the more I know, the more I enjoy the taste of cheese in different ways. From now on, you also have a choice of various cheeses when you drink wine.

The best transportation to travel Seoul

EIT 200702724 Hyunmin Lee

Travelling city is fascinating. But if you fail to choose appropriate transportation for your trip, a situation can be opposite. Therefore, you should ponder over transportation, when you make a plan for city tour. In the process of deciding transportation, saving time and money will be important select standard. And, you have to think about theme of your trip, too. For example, if your theme is visiting every tourism attractions in a short time, the best way is riding a subway. That's because subway is the fastest transportation. Like other cities, Seoul is also crowed. And, there is traffic jam frequently. So, what transportation you choose may decide quality of your trip. As one of citizens in Seoul, I will let you know what the best transportation to enjoy Seoul is.

The best transportation to travel Seoul is a bus. First of all, bus fee is very cheap. It's less than 1 dollar. So, you can save lots of money as you use the bus. And there are 420 bus routes. You can get to everywhere in Seoul. In addition, some routes even operate to Gyeonggi Province. With that bus, you can visit some tourism attractions in Gyeonggi Province, too. Another advantage of using bus is that you can enjoy a great view of Seoul. While you move to other destination, you can see Han river, Nam-san or skyscrapers through a window. Since you can see the view, you will not be bored during travel time. And it is also good to people whose theme is seeing every part in Seoul. Fresh air is also one of advantages of using bus. As you know, subway and subway stations are not well-ventilated. But, the bus is ventilated well by being opened the doors and windows.

The second good transportation is a subway. Like bus, subway fee is also cheap. It is same price as bus. And subway is also easy to transfer. Now, there are nine lines, those lines are connected to each other. Without paying money again, you can transfer to other line.

Finally, the last good transportation is a taxi. Compare to other transportation, it is expensive. However, taxi is very convenient. Above all, the taxi operates just for you. You don't have to take a roundabout way. The driver will help you go directly to other destination. Furthermore, the driver will land you right in front of your destination. Then, you don't have to walk and you can save time. For people who dislike walking or who are very tired, taxi is the best choice.

If some of you want to travel Seoul, pay attention to a priority of transportation that I said. The top priority is bus and subway, taxi follow it. This ranking is not a general idea, but you can get help from this information in anyway. In order to make a good trip, you should make a plan specifically from accommodation to transportation. When you travel, you may spend a lot of time on moving. If you understand the advantages of the each transportation well, you can manage your trip better.

Contemporary Transportations

First Draft

The world is becoming even smaller than ever. For example, long time ago, it took a year to travel from Europe to Asia, but today, it can be done in a single day. Transportation technology is getting more and more unbelievable. It became more convenient to move around and as a result, it led us to the era of globalization. Transportation, in general, can be categorized into three modes: land, water, and air. Each mode has its own advantages.

First is land transportation, which is the oldest way of travel. Nowadays, there are two kinds of transportation: car and train. For about the car, the most important aspect is convenience. Car always is in front of home, and it can go wherever driver wants to go.

Neither none of these is less important than others nor none should be excluded alone.

Cause and effect essay

The Black Death in the continent

Do you know why people call this disease as the Black Death? It's because it burns people until their death. Even though people found out the rodent was the main cause of infection, they couldn't find out the cure of it. This Black death often appears as materials of literature that describe miserable hopeless life of that day; The disease brought shadows of death over whole European country.

The plague became fear itself since its first initiation killed 2.5million people in 1340s; The number of death was one third of people in Europe at that time. Except for the first initiation, the Black Death took millions of lives over and over again; Especially in Britain, 7 million people died only in 14th century and it didn't stop. In addition, in Asia's case, the death rate was near 90 percents of popularity in 1353

The disease ruined not only people but also society. Under influence of the virus this period was quite depressed and drenched with pessimism all over the continent. People regarded that the Jew, homeless people was the cause of the disease, in this reason they exercised violence onto them and even slaughtered poor people. In 14th century, In 1348, many village of the Jews was destroyed, genocide occurs 350 times at that time. Nobody couldn't think catching the rats is the solution.

After few year, people started to believe superstition, and the statue of cleric fell down. People thought they should relieve their guilt, so they made injury themselves. People couldn't find clue any of it, so the nations banned import stuff from abroad. From this, the big countries like England and German faced inflation.

The Black Death was everywhere. In Europe, Asia, central Asia and even North Africa. Nothing have broken death rate record after the plague in the history until now. At that time people reckoned the virus as judgement of god, so there were a famous novel that contained those substance; Foul Forrest in 1656. Someone might say that we don't need to worry about pest because we have advanced medical system. However experts anticipated the terrorist can use the virus in their work, therefore I guess human race is not free from the Black Death yet.

Kim Hyunju first draft

What makes people happy?

Academic Writing, June 28, 2010

Kim Hyunju

Have you ever seen a movie, The Pursuit of Happiness starring Will Smith? It is a story about a young poor guy trying to have happiness. Although I did not miss any scene of the movie, I could not find out what happiness is in the end. He just kept finding the place to stay overnight and making money to take care of his son. The journey was too difficult to endure, but he never gave up dreaming about the better future. I realized that the whole process to gain happiness is a kind of happiness. We can make ourselves happy as taking care of our families, enjoying our works and having hope for the future.

Although family members sometimes fight and hurt each other, we become happy with our family by exchanging emotional and financial supports. When we have troubles, we usually discuss with our parents, brothers and sisters. They are the only people who can give a real advice that are sometimes difficult to say to others. That is why people try to avoid hurting others’ feeling by giving direct advices. However, family members show their thoughtful concern by conveying wisdom gained from their life experience. Furthermore, we can get a financial support from family when we face a monetary problem such as a debt or a tuition fee. We can feel their affection, sincerity and loyalty through these kinds of supports and try to express love and take care of our family. By reinforcing family bond, we can be satisfied. When Will in the movie became a homeless and his wife left, what was left for him was only his son. Some people might say that being alone is better to overcome such a situation. However, I don’t think that he would endure difficulties without his own son because he might have a will to survive and be happy by taking care of his family.

Another condition to make us happy is a work. It might be strange to people who hate their job and try to make money. However, I think that the whole process of getting to know what we want to do is a great joy. Even if we waste our life to find out our aptitude, we can learn from failure and get a lesson. Through this course, we can improve our knowledge and skills and do better next time. People generally content with achievements and good results that they have done in their job and realize life without any challenges is boring. For example, Will worked only for making money at first. When he started to work in finance field, he was no longer a salesman who was poor at selling medical equipment. He became to have confidence by making couple of contracts and got to know the pleasure of working. Finally, he became successful businessman despites of difficulties.

Lastly, having hope makes people happy. Just believe ourselves, our potential, and see the bright side of the future. It doesn’t mean that we should pay for having the better future or depend on our luck. If we keep complaining and do nothing, there is no progress. We can relieve from the belief that our lives will be better in the future. It gives a power to overcome obstacles in front of us. Even when Will spent a night in toilet with his son due to no place to sleep, he never gave up dreaming. He believed that he would have a place to take a rest and make his son be full tomorrow. Actually, his life was miserable but getting better like his belief.

The movie, the pursuit of happiness, showed just a man struggling to survive in troubles. However, we can get a lesson that the family, job and hope make people happy. Although these are not magical mysteries, we might not feel happiness without them. Remember happiness are always around us.

Assignment No.2, 2nd Draft by Joontae Kim

The Deadly Wind that Whirls Around

Imagine a death toll of 695, over 2000 injuries, and property damage of over 16.5 million dollars. It is the statistics that indicates the aftermath of the deadliest tornado, a tornado that broke out in Mussouri, Illinois and Indiana called 'The Tri State Tornado'. Although this kind of violent tornado only count for 2% of all tornadoes, we should be aware of what effects can tornadoes bring about and learn about ways to prepare for it. A tornado, a funnel-shaped whirling wind accompanied by the thunderstorm when hot and cold air are mixed, can bring about phsycial and psychological damage on human being as well as severe property damages.

One of the major effects of the tornadoes is the physical effect on us, the human beings. As I have mentioned above, the violent tornadoes bring about hundreds and thousands of deaths and injuries. Although people normally imagine that the whirling wind itself is the main cause of those inuries and deaths, the flying debris actually are accountable for those casualties. The wind force of a tornado is so powerful that it can tear apart the roofing materials, parts of cars and other heavy objects. The deaths and severe injuries occur when people are hit by these debris
carried out by the tornadoes. For instance, an outbreak of tornado in Minnesota, USA lifted up a 88 ton railroad coach and threw it away for almost 30 meters. Can you imagine how damaging small pieces of furniture and other household materials could have been?

Also, there is a long-lasting psychological effect on people. Those who were fortunate enough to survive from severe tornado still may suffer from what is called as the post traumatic stress disorder. It is a disorder that develops when people have experienced very traumatic events such as wars, plane crashes, or natural calamities such as an earthquake, a tornado, and a hurricane. Even with proper treatment, people may frequently recollect the moment they barely survived the tornado, avoid the situation such as going out on a very windy day that reminds them of the incident, and feel extremely anxious for the rest of their lives.

Last but not least, there is the property damage. The strong wind force of tornado completely destructs the whole area that is affected by it. Although weak tornadoes may bring about minor damages such as a broken window or partial destruction of house, the most violent tornades can even destruct the structure of 100 meter tall buildings. In case of the widest tornado that occured recently in Nebraska, the tornado destructed 95% of all houses and buildings that were located in the area. Even though it was occurred in a rural area, it resulted in the property damage of 175 million dollars. Furthermore, the property damage includes the effort people must put into restore the damages that has been done. It takes months and months to rebuild the houses and buildings, restore the infrastructure such as water supply, electricity as well as traffic and others. Not only the contractors for the restoration work but also residents of the area have to put countless hours into the rebuilding of the area.

A tornado is weather phenomenon that can bring about devasting results: physical effect such as deaths and severe injuries, long-lasting psychological effect such as post traumatic stress disorder as well as enormous damage on personal property and social infrastructure. Since it is a natural phenomenon, we cannot prevent from occurring in the first place. I, however, believe that we can minimize the death tolls and injuries by proceeding a campaign on tornades including information such as what are the indicators of upcoming tornado, how to react to it, where is the nearest emergency shelter, and others.

Journey to Happiness

If someone asks you to grade your happiness index, how many points will you give to yourself concerning happiness? If you did, what are your standards on happiness? I know it's hard to grade about invisible, emotional thing. Then why don't you make your own touchstones? Today, I will show you my touchstones on happiness through my experiences, which would be talking point. My happiness exists along with my own three canons which are identity, responsibility, and gratitude.

In my life, more than once, I asked myself who I am. I didn't realize why such a question is so important all over the world until 2007 when is my most meaningful year. Even though I slipped to enter a university, I believed myself to handle everything under any circumstances. Even if it may be so, I felt weird to live a little bit different life from friends. I've lived for 19years with belonging to somewhere such as primary school, middle school, and high school like any other friends. After high school graduate, however, I belong to no where overnight. Looking back on it now, I slightly suffered from depression for a while because of stress from different life. And finally I found out who I am. The answer was I'm just a normal 20 years old girl as well as I'm thirsty for knowledge strongly. I was so happy to know what I want, what I want to be, and what I should do. Making identity clear is the first way to happiness.

As you know, a university forces us to be adults whether we are ready to be or not. All things around us depend on our performances from deciding something to managing time. We don't have any place to get back. Then we have to face any challenges. Regardless of results, we should take challenges as themselves. I'm saying the more important thing is doing something with responsibility. When I worked at espresso bar, I felt pressures to manage the bar. But the reason I did great job was my responsibility. It was my responsibility that got over the burden. From now on, if you do something, you'd better have a great sense of responsibility. Then, without reference to its result, you deserve to feel happiness.

In your daily life, how many times do you express your gratitude a day? I think the person who can't say 'thank you' is the unhappiest in the world. There are a huge number of persons who work for our daily lives. For instance, when you say hello or give thanks to bus driver, he will probably spend his day in happiness. And there are another large number of persons who want to live like your life. In some ways, we have privileges that we are here to study English with the well-educated native professor in freezing spacious room in hot summer. In other words, I could take happiness in my daily life, even though my ordinary feeling might be special to others. Give thanks for everything.

What do you think of my three standards? Did I argue about too trivial matters? I think the happiness is just one thing out of our whole life. I mentioned only three things which make me happy: identity, responsibility, gratitude, even if you could add more. Creating happiness is conditional on how you do. And we may keep travel to happiness as we did during last thousands years. In the mean time, try to make yourself happy, because it is possible that happiness is contagious. Then people around you would also be happy.
